When creating a lead, can I set theFirst nameorLast nameas a required field?
Answer
The user's last name is automatically set as required, however it is not possible to set their first name as mandatory as well.

What do we do if we are importing contacts without a last name?

The import would fail since importing contacts would require a last name. So they would need something in the 'last name' column to successfully import. But if you opt to just upload the Company Name with no First Name as a lead, it should work.
